Who are we? (A Data Investigation)

Posted on Sep 3, 2012 in How We Learn, Maths

This month, we have been getting to know each other through Mathematics.

We’ve been writing questions, designing surveys and collecting lots of data about our classmates. We’ve learned to find and interpret the mean, median, mode & range of data sets. We’ve learned to use different graphs for different purposes. We’ve discovered the importance of scale and labels on our own graphs.

We’ve gathered data on our ages, learning strengths, birthday months, time at BISS and modes of transport. We even measured our heights and jump lengths. Here we are, busily collecting data:

In the end, we hope to describe our class composition and even answer the question: Who is the average Grade 4 student?

Stay tuned for our findings!

    Dear Ms. O’Dwyer

I was happy that day when we collected data because my jump first was short but now it is longer. I have been practising my fitness and that’s why I am happy. Ms.O’Dwyer did you know I’m almost longest in Grade 4 now?

    THANK YOU Ms.O’Dwyer!

      Dear Kaopoon,

That’s wonderful news! If we changed our data set to include your new jumping score, how would it change our averages? What would happen to the mean? What would happen to the range? Would the median change? Come and see me so we can do this extra investigation! It will be very interesting.

Thanks for sharing your jumping success!
      Kind regards,

      Ms O’Dwyer

    Dear Ms O’Dwyer,

It was a really fun day! I like collecting data and finding out what is mean, mode and medium with friends.
I really enjoyed that day. Thank you for teaching us about data!

    Kind Regards,

    Dear Ms O’d wyer,

It was really fun to collect data and found out what is mean, mode and medium with friends. My favourite part was collecting data about ‘how far can I jump?’. You will know lots of things about me and friends from our data. Thank you for teaching us about data words!

    Kind Regards,
    Hyun Seo

    Dear Ms. O’Dwyer,

It’s a COOL idea to make data in math time. It was so fun to collect data about jumping, height and other things. I think nobody is the average grade 4 person. I’ll wait for the another fun math activity because I know we will do one!

    Kind regards,
    Joshua

    Dear Ms.Odwyer

It was such a fun day in my life! I liked it because when people made jumps that were not really good, people didn’t say it was bad. But we had a little bit of fighting when we were measuring. We had to decide who got to measure and if they were doing it right. It was a fun day for Math.

    Kind regards,
    Na Youn
