# Groovy Geometry

Posted on Nov 30, 2012 in Maths

We have recently completed our math investigation into geometry. After learning about the work of Greek mathematicians during our Ancient Civilizations Unit, it was our turn to make discoveries!

Using compasses, rulers and protractors, we were challenged to construct 2D shapes, tessellations and patterns. We discovered the properties of circles, strategies for folding right-angled triangles and the mysteries of pentagons. The diagonals of pentagons hold many secrets!

In these hands-on inquiries, we developed problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of geometry.

Here are some of our cool tessellations.

Dear, Ms.O’Dwyer

I enjoyed the part when I finished my geometry designs because thet look cool. The part that was hard was when I coloured the circle because I tried to make a difficult pattern. The easy part is when I drew the line for circle with the compass.

Kind Regards
Poonnapa

Dear Ms O’Dwyer,
I was excited learning about geometry and i was interested that the ancient Greeks made these discoveries about geometry but i want to know why and how they learned about geometry in ancient times? Is it related to something? I would like you to know that i had a great time working with Sajid to create the artwork.

Kind Regards,
Benedict

Dear Ms. O’dwyer,

I was very interested in Geometry unit in Math.
Thank you for teaching us! In Thailand, I learned all about shapes! We had different kinds of shapes, but we didn’t learn about parallel lines and things such as those. Now I have a Question – How did the Ancient Greek make these discoveries about triangles?

Sincerely,
Poonnapa

4. jermaine

Dear Ms O’Dwyer

It was so fun for us to use compasses and rulers to make circles and use 2D shapes to make hexagons or circles.

The designs look great and we all made a lot of geometry designs to be better at maths.

Kind regards,
Jermaine

5. Geon woo

Dear Ms. O’Dwyer

Making shapes with right angled triangle, compass and circles was very fun! The shapes we made were wonderful. I am excited about the next project we are doing.

Kind regards,
Geon Woo

6. Joshua

Dear Ms. O’Dwyer

It was a very cool activity to make wonderful artwork by using our knowledge of geometry. We also did lots of other fun tasks for our geometry homework and this was very cool. I have a question and it’s not about lines, angle or polygons. My question is, “is geometry important? If it is, then why?”

Kind regards,
Joshua

Interesting question, Joshua!

Geometry is very important and useful in our lives for so many reasons. I wonder if our classmates can help to answer your question, before I give you my own examples.

Grade 4, why is geometry important in the world?

Dear Ms.O’Dwyer,
I was very excited to use shapes to make patterns. We used circles, lines and triangles. Now I know lot about geometry. These activities were really cool!

I have a question. How did Greeks make discoveries of these shapes?

Kind Regards,
Hyun Seo
