Average Adam – Our Imaginary Friend

Posted on Sep 4, 2012 in How We Learn, Maths

Today we finished our data investigation called Who Are We?  After collecting lots of data about the people in our class, we could finally answer the question: Who is the average Grade 4 student?

It was a little tricky to give a final answer. We had to organise our data and think carefully about whether to use the mean, median or mode for each category.

Would you like to meet the average student?  It turns out that no-one in our class fits the profile. We created Average Adam to be our imaginary friend and represent us all. Read  about his features below.

Average Adam

Average Adam is a boy. He is 9 years and 6 months old and his birthday is in December. He is 137.5cm tall and he can jump a distance of 126.5cm. Adam has been at BISS for 1 year and he travels to school by bus. He loves Maths and his strength is logical intelligence. Adam’s favorite colour is blue.

How do you compare with Adam?

How are you similar? How are you different?

    Dear Ms.O’Dwyer

I really like topics about maths. It is my second favorite subject and also the subject I’m best at.

I have 4 things which are the same as Average Adam. This activity was so fun!

Ms.O’Dwyer, I have a question. Do you know a person who is really same as Average Adam?

    Kind regards,

    Sang Won

      Dear Sang Won,

You are an excellent mathematician! I’m so glad you enjoy these investigations.

It’s interesting that you found 4 commonalities with our average student.

Nobody in our class matches the profile completely. Why do you think that is? What does that tell us about the data and about our class?

      Keep up the great thinking.
      Kind regards,

      Ms O’Dwyer

    Dear Ms O’Dwyer,

I like the idea of Average Adam because its represents our class. And it was fun getting information about our class by maths.

    Best Regards,

    Dear Ms O’Dwyer,

I like Average Adam because he is part of Grade 4. Also he is not real. I think that is cool too! But I can see him in my head for sure.

    Kind regards,

    Dear Ms O’Dwyer
I really like this math activity and I think Adam is funny. I have two parts of me that are the same as Adam. I want to know which country does Adam come from?

    Kind regards,

    • Ms O'Dwyer

      Dear Kazuki,

      What a great question!

It would be great if you would survey the nationalities of children in our class. Then we can answer your question.

Your question also makes me wonder: What languages are spoken by children in our class?

      Let’s keep collecting data!
      Great thinking, Takumi!

      Kind regards,

      Ms O’Dwyer
